Choosing a Sexy Blindfold for Kinky Bedroom Fun

For couples enjoying kink in the bedroom, sex and blindfolds are natural bedfellows, often recommended in tips for beginners as a fun and non-threatening introduction to kinky fun and games.

Sexy Blindfolds

The typical selling point of blindfolds tends to center around enhancing your other senses. I'm not sure if that is scientifically true - but with visual distractions removed you are free to focus on other sensations and the experience can certainly feel more intense. There is also the thrill of the unexpected. A touch on your arm, a feather drifting lightly over your nipple, a tongue pressed against... well, you get the idea! ;-)

So far as beginners kink goes, I really can't think of any better starting point than a nice, luxurious blindfold.

But, where do you go from there? Here are one or two suggestions before we get into some descriptions.

  • Sex in a blindfold
Yes, we appreciate this suggestion is almost too obvious, but you honestly don't have to go any further than this, unless you want to. Having blindfolded your lover you can enjoy teasing them with the unexpected, and they are pushed into using their hands to explore in ways that feel new and unfamiliar. It's a really fun shift in dynamics, and our one top-tip is make sure you use a good blindfold; peeking out under a cheap blindfold, or having it fall off, will lessen this experience.
  • Blindfolded Handjob
Oral sex while your partner is blindfolded is delightful, but why not reverse roles and wear the blindfold yourself while giving him a "happy" massage? From the first time I tried this it's fascinating to feel him throbbing and swelling at your fingertips, without any visual feedback. Probably best to let him be in charge of the massage oil to avoid unexpected spillages; you'll have an expected spillage soon enough!
  • Add some bedroom bondage
Choose a comfortable and accessible position, and if your blindfold of choice requires knots, we've found it's often a good idea to put it on first. In the bedroom, a classic "X" spreadeagle for her, or a "T" shape for him, are great starting points. It's a nice balance of exposure and comfort, and is very easy to set up. Depending on your bedframe, a good under the bed restraints system might be helpful.
  • Getting kinky
What more can we say? Adding a blindfold is another fab tool in your kinky armory. But, consider the balance of visual stimuli vs the thrill of not knowing quite what to expect. We found this Psychology Today article interesting: Fun With Blindfolds, Especially When Worn by Women. With a little experimentation you soon find the type of scenarios that can be enhanced with a blindfold.

So without further ado, here are our picks of three blindfolds from our naughty toy box...

Lovehoney Basic

This is very much along the lines of a sleep-mask that you might use at home, or be given on an air flight. The material and stitching is nice quality and the double-elastic that wraps above and below your ear does keep it in place pretty nicely.

It blocks light fairly well and will certainly restrict your vision, but peeking is very easy and worn lying in bed you can fairly easily see out from underneath it, as it doesn't lie particularly flush to your face. One advantage is that it does look completely innocent on your bedside.

This was our first blindfold, but we quickly upgraded to the Tease Me version below.

Lovehoney Tease Me

We found this was an excellent upgrade. The silky fabric is lovely and the addition of a flexible wire along the bottom of the blindfold allows it to be fine-tuned to the shape of your eyes and nose, dramatically reducing the opportunity for peeking!

This particular product is discontinued, but the Lovehoney Silky Black Blindfold is extremely similar.

For light bedroom bondage, this feels to us like the ideal sweet-spot of price and quality.

Japanese Tenugui

A tenugui is a Japanese cotton face cloth. They're easily and cheaply available online from the likes of Amazon, but quality does vary. The example below is a single layer of cotton and there is no stitching around the edge, which means it tends to fray quite easily.

It's a DIY approach to blindfolds, but as our interest in Shibari (Japanese style rope bondage, aka Kinbaku) has developed, this form of traditional, improvised blindfold has probably become our most frequent method. Tied firmly with a double-overhand knot, it stays in place well and it's very rare that I've been able to peek out.

A possible disadvantage is that (at least with our inexpensive tenugui cloths) there is no blackout effect. Light will filter through the cotton to some extent, but if you simply want to be prevented from seeing what's going on, this solution works extremely well.

Summary

We've been taking a rummage through our toy box and looking at our favourite blindfolds. If this sounds interesting, you'll certainly enjoy some of our earlier bedroom bondage articles. We've also picked out a few useful product links that might add to your fun!

Previously on our blog we discussed Real Handcuffs vs Furry Handcuffs. The topic of blindfolds brought this article back into mind - sometimes it's well worth taking a step up in quality as it will prove better value in the long run.
